I am from a small barrio in Puerto Rico. Every weekend I was so excited because I would get to go to my grandpa's farm and pick the coffee cherries. Then we scattered the cherries on the ground to dry by the sun, clean them and into the sack they go. It was fun, all the grandkids and family doing this together. At the end of the day, and back home, it was our time to relax and drink our coffee. No milk, sugar or anything, just plain black coffee. My mama would make it with some of the coffee beans that were processed and roasted the prior week. She used our famous "El Colador," the Puerto Rican way to brew the coffee. The aroma in the house was wonderful and the coffee was so fresh with so much flavor. Those are the times you never forget. Time went by and I am no longer there but I still remember. One day my husband was with a customer who sells coffee roasters. They chatted and the customer gave him a bag of fresh roasted coffee he had just finished on one of the roasters. When my husband got home, that fresh roasted smell brought back memories of my childhood. Now, here we are, using those memories to inspire Dusty Roads, our own roasting company and making a dream a reality. We hope you will enjoy our coffee the same way we do.
We roast in small batches to get the perfect roast type from City Roast, Full Roast, and Robust, at the perfect time. We want you to have fresh roasted beans ready to make the freshest cup of coffee you deserve.
We pride ourselves on providing great coffee flavors and blends. That is why we are always in search of the best quality green beans from the best farms around the world. We roast the coffee slowly in small batches to ensure perfection, and will roast within a day or two of your order. This will allow you to receive the freshest and most flavorful coffee.
Degassing of roasted coffee emits carbon dioxide which is needed to protect the delicate flavor and aroma of the coffee. Fresh roasted coffee needs to air out for about 2-3 days after roasting in order for it to taste perfect. We use one-way valve degassing bags that squeezes out excess air, but doesn't allow it back in. This will keep air and moisture out to prolong your fresh roasted coffee.
We ship whole roasted coffee bean for a reason- think of fresh roasted coffee as fresh bread. Whole beans are best for holding the freshness of the roast. They do this by emitting CO2 from the moment they leave the roaster, which forces out the oxygen and moisture that otherwise quickly breaks down the integrity of the beans.
The act of pulverization effectively multiples the surfaces of the ground coffee. There’s no chemical change to the coffee, but the best way to think about the difference is to think about why we crack pepper, or grind cinnamon by hand, because it enhances flavor by creating new surfaces. However, we do and will grind your coffee if you prefer.
So how you should grind your coffee? Here is a quick reference guide that will help you.
After you grind your coffee it is up to you in regards to the measurement. For a drip, we usually recommend 2 scoops for 8 to 10 oz of water, if you want a medium nice flavor and body. Each palate is different, so you may have to try a few times to find your perfect balance of flavor.
